Medical Support

Bahrain has three main government hospitals: King Hamad (Muharraq); Salmaniya (close to Manama); and Bahrain Defence Force - BDF (Riffa).  There are also several government Health Centres.  Expats are able to use these facilities, although they cater primarily for the Bahraini community, and speaking and reading Arabic would be an advantage.

There are also many specialist and private hospitals across the island.  Often health insurance will be provided by the main visa holder’s employer, so check which hospitals (and doctors within a hospital) are covered by your policy.

In Bahrain it is usual that you would visit a hospital even for a minor ailment or a general check up.  Several hospitals have 24 hour clinics, and most have specialist Paediatric departments.

The maternity services in Bahrain are generally of a good quality, and many expats remain in Bahrain to give birth, rather than return 'home'.

Some of the commonly used private ‘general’ hospitals (providing multiple services) include:

  • Royal Bahrain Hospital (Mahooz)

  • Bahrain Specialist Hospital (Juffair)

  • American Mission Hospital (Gudabaiya and Sar)

  • International Hospital (Budaiya Highway)

  • Al Kindi (Mahooz)
